American Express Platinum Card

NEW YORK, October 5 — The American Express Platinum Card’s Platinum Member Airfares program delivers an average 10% savings on select premium international seats, with independent research showing discounts exceeding 40% in some cases, reducing certain premium economy fares to standard economy levels. The benefit applies to domestic economy, international premium economy, business class, and first class tickets when booked through American Express using an eligible Amex Platinum or Business Platinum card.

Payment must be made in full with the card, and departures must originate from a U.S. airport or select Canadian gateways. Refundable, restricted, and nonrefundable tickets are all eligible, meaning cardmembers do not need to book high-fare classes to access savings.

Cardmembers earn 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on Platinum Member Airfares bookings via AmexTravel.com, valued at 2.2 cents per point, yielding an effective return of 11% on spending. This earning rate is capped at $500,000 in annual purchases for the consumer Platinum Card, while the Business Platinum Card has no annual cap on points earned through the program. Points can be redeemed for flights at 1 cent per point.

The Business Platinum Card offers an additional 35% rebate on points after booking a flight on a preselected airline, limited to 1 million points per calendar year. The program allows booking for up to seven travel companions, but the eligible cardmember must be traveling to receive the discount.

Participating airlines include Aer Lingus, Austrian, Finnair, Lufthansa, Aeromexico, British Airways, Iberia, Malaysia Airlines, Air Canada, Brussels Airlines, Icelandair, Qantas, Air Europa, Cathay Pacific, ITA Airways, Qatar Airways, Air France, China Airlines, Japan Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Air India, Delta Air Lines, Kenya Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Discover Airlines, KLM, SWISS, Air Tahiti Nui, El Al, Korean Air, TAP Air Portugal, Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines, Emirates, La Compagnie, Turkish Airlines, Asiana Airlines, Etihad Airways, LATAM, and Virgin Atlantic.

American Express does not specify which routes or airlines offer one-way discounts, requiring cardmembers to search individually to determine eligibility. The source material includes an advertiser disclosure noting that the site may receive financial compensation from credit card companies when users click links, apply, or open accounts, which may influence product placement, though editorial content is produced independently by experts who only recommend products they use or endorse.

Looking ahead, cardmembers will need to actively compare fares across participating airlines to identify the highest-value discounts, as savings vary by route, carrier, and fare type with no guaranteed minimum. Monitoring individual airline participation and one-way eligibility will remain key to maximizing the benefit.
