Passenger missing after going overboard on Carnival cruise ship

LONG BEACH, September 25 — The story begins with a ship on its way home. The Carnival Panorama was sailing from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, back to Long Beach, California, on the seventh and final day of a seven-night voyage, when a male passenger went overboard. Carnival Cruise Line confirmed on Saturday that the male guest had jumped overboard.

The incident occurred as the vessel was on its return leg to Southern California, having departed Long Beach and called at several coastal communities in Mexico before turning north.

An hour behind closed doors

What unfolded aboard the ship was confusion first, then confirmation. When the ship’s team was notified of a missing guest, it initiated search and investigation procedures, including reviewing CCTV footage and notifying both the U.S. and Mexico Coast Guards. Passengers were ordered to return to their rooms during a lockdown that lasted about an hour.

Michael Bedwell, a passenger aboard the Panorama, told Eyewitness News that he had been on many cruises and had never experienced anything like it. He described crew members walking around telling everyone to go back to their rooms.

Passengers did not initially know what was happening, he said, and were told only that a person was being looked for. A crew member then announced to passengers that the team had completed a review of the ship’s man-overboard cameras and confirmed the guest had gone overboard. Local authorities, the crew member added, would continue the search and rescue.

Family notified, questions open

The victim’s family and friends have been notified. Carnival said it is providing support to the family who was traveling with the guest, and that its thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones. It was not immediately clear why the man went overboard.

The investigation into how and why the passenger went overboard is ongoing, with both U.S. and Mexican authorities involved in the search and rescue operation. The Carnival Panorama is one of the vessels operated by Carnival Cruise Line, a major cruise operator.

Its route from Puerto Vallarta to Long Beach is a common itinerary for Mexican Riviera cruises departing from Southern California. For those involved, the final night of a week at sea ended with cabins locked, cameras reviewed, and two coast guards called. What to watch next is the search itself, and whatever the ongoing investigation establishes about how a passenger came to go overboard on a routine run home.
