Biden Withdraws from 2024 Election After Disastrous June Debate Performance

The 2024 presidential election unfolded in a manner few anticipated at the beginning of the year. What voters encountered on November 5 was not the contest originally planned.

Instead, it was a race fundamentally altered by a single June evening. Joe Biden entered the year as the incumbent president. He had navigated the Democratic primaries with little challenge.

However, his performance in the June debate was broadly viewed as weak. This triggered an immediate and severe reaction within his own party.

Long-standing, quiet concerns about Biden’s age and health erupted into public demands for him to exit the race. Biden initially resisted these calls for weeks. On July 21, he made the historic decision to withdraw.

This made him the first eligible incumbent to abandon a re-election bid since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.

Biden promptly endorsed his vice president. Kamala Harris became the nominee on August 5. She had not participated in the primaries.

No Democratic primary voter had selected her. This placed her as the first nominee in that position since Hubert Humphrey in 1968.

The parallel was notable: two party crises, separated by 56 years, yielding a similar brokered result. Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential candidate, completing the Democratic ticket. The Republican path was more direct. Donald Trump had lost the 2020 election to Biden.

He continued his campaign without pause. He sought a nonconsecutive second term, a return to power not seen in the United States for over a century.

His November 5 victory over Harris and Walz confirmed that return. Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, are scheduled to take office in January. The election’s result represents a major shift.

The Republican ticket won, and the Democratic ticket lost. That is the core fact.

However, the journey to that outcome was marked by Democratic disarray. The party’s nominee was a candidate who had never faced a single primary voter. She was selected by a president who was forced out by his own allies.

This chain of events is not typical. It is the kind of development recorded in history books as a warning.

The nation now prepares for a second Trump presidency. The first ended with an election loss, a Capitol riot, and an impeachment trial. The second begins with a party that has strengthened its control, a vice president who emerged from the turmoil, and a Democratic Party still analyzing its failures.

The 2024 election was not a standard transfer of power. It was a rupture, and its consequences will unfold over the coming years.
