What legal action will Himanta Sarma take regarding the threat to gherao Zubeen?

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has approached the Supreme Court and Gauhati High Court seeking protection after a legislator-led group threatened to gherao his residence in connection with the Zubeen Garg murder case.

The Threat and Legal Response

Sarma alleged that the threat, issued by a group led by a legislator, posed a “danger to my family and could amount to a direct attempt to murder” .

Background: The Zubeen Garg Case

The case involves the murder of Zubeen Garg, with seven individuals arrested between October 1 and 10 last year. Among them were Singapore festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, musicians Amritprabha Mahanta and Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Garg’s cousin Sandipan Garg, and two personal security officers .

The accused face charges including murder, culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, and financial offences. Notably, a Singapore court ruled Garg’s death an accidental drowning, finding no evidence of foul play .

Court Proceedings

The Gauhati High Court granted bail to Amritprava Mahanta on October 9, against a bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of the same amount. The court noted that 160 witnesses had not named her during the hearing, though they had during the Special Investigation Team’s investigation .

The Supreme Court will hear the bail petitions of prime accused Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddhartha Sharma on November 30 .

What Comes Next

Sarma’s petitions highlight the escalating tensions surrounding the case. With the Supreme Court set to hear key bail petitions, the legal proceedings will likely shape the next phase of this high-profile case.

The Chief Minister’s legal action underscores the gravity of the threat and his determination to ensure safety for his family. As the case unfolds, the courts’ decisions will be closely watched.
