TOKYO, July 16 — A new fabric technology is turning the sun’s heat into a selective tool for farmers, promising to cool crops without starving them of the light they need to grow. The material, called Solament AgriCool Shade, was developed by Sumitomo Metal Mining. It works by targeting a specific part of sunlight known as near-infrared (NIR) light.
NIR light contributes significantly to heat but plays no role in photosynthesis, the process plants use to convert light into energy. Conventional shade nets block all sunlight indiscriminately.
They reduce heat, but they also cut down on the visible light that plants actually need. Farmers have long faced a trade-off: cooler fields or higher yields. AgriCool Shade is designed to break that compromise.
How the science works The fabric uses a material technology called Solament to selectively absorb NIR light. Visible light, which plants rely on for photosynthesis, passes through almost unhindered.
By absorbing only the heat-generating portion of sunlight, the fabric reduces heat stress on crops while preserving the light essential for growth. No specific percentages of NIR blocked or visible light transmitted were provided in the source material. But the principle is clear: different wavelengths of light have different effects on plants and the environment.
AgriCool Shade is built around that distinction. What this means for growers For farmers, the innovation addresses a long-standing problem. Traditional shade nets cool the air but also dim the light, often leading to slower growth or lower yields.
By letting visible light through while filtering out NIR, AgriCool Shade could help crops stay productive even under heat stress. Heat stress is a growing concern for agriculture worldwide.
Rising temperatures can reduce crop quality and shorten growing seasons. A fabric that cools without sacrificing light offers a practical tool for adapting to warmer conditions. Sumitomo Metal Mining developed the Solament technology behind the fabric.
The company has not announced when AgriCool Shade will be commercially available or at what cost. Looking ahead Selective light management is still an emerging field in agriculture.
Most shade solutions are one-size-fits-all, blocking sunlight broadly. AgriCool Shade represents a more precise approach, one that treats sunlight not as a single force but as a spectrum of different wavelengths with different jobs. If the technology proves scalable and affordable, it could give farmers in hot climates a new way to protect their crops.
For now, the fabric remains a promising development in the effort to grow more food with less heat.
