Mamdani-backed challengers oust two incumbent New York congressmen

Zohran Mamdani

Two sitting congressmen lost their primaries in a single night. That fact alone tells you something unusual happened in New York City on Tuesday. Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s democratic socialist allies defeated Adriano Espaillat and Dan Goldman.

Espaillat had been in Congress since 2017. He chaired the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Goldman had served two terms. Both fell to challengers backed by the mayor’s endorsement operation. The most striking result came in Espaillat’s district.

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a democratic socialist who helped organize pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University, beat the five-term incumbent. Mamdani’s endorsement of Chevalier was described as his most polarizing pick.

She had no seniority, no committee gavel, no institutional power. She had grassroots organizing and ideological energy. That was enough.

Chevalier’s victory suggests something about the current moment in Democratic politics. Seniority did not protect Espaillat. His role as head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus did not save him.

Institutional backing could not overcome a motivated base that turned out for a candidate backed by the mayor. Mamdani won the mayoralty in 2025 on a progressive platform.

His endorsement operation proved decisive in these primaries, turning out voters who supported him. The mayor has pushed rent control expansions and criticized U.S. military aid to Israel. The primary results signal that New York’s House delegation will likely shift left on housing policy, taxes, and Israel policy.

Goldman lost to a Mamdani-backed challenger as well. The two-term incumbent could not hold his seat against the mayor’s machine.

Two losses in one night is rare in New York politics. Incumbents usually have advantages in name recognition and fundraising. Those advantages did not matter Tuesday.

The primaries drew national attention. They were seen as a proxy fight between the party’s progressive and moderate wings. The progressive wing won decisively in the nation’s largest city.

That has implications beyond New York. Other progressive organizations will study how Mamdani’s operation turned out voters and defeated established incumbents.

Chevalier’s background as a pro-Palestinian organizer at Columbia University is notable. The protests there drew national attention and raised questions about the Democratic Party’s stance on Israel. Mamdani has been critical of U.S. military aid to Israel.

Chevalier’s victory suggests that position has electoral support in New York City. Espaillat had represented his district since 2017.

He had built relationships, raised money, and held power. None of it stopped a first-time candidate backed by the mayor. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus lost its chair.

That loss will be felt in Washington. Investors are watching. Policy changes on housing, taxes, and Israel policy could affect markets.

Rent control expansions could reshape New York’s real estate landscape. Changes to Israel policy could shift U.S. foreign policy debates.

The primary results are a signal of what is coming. Mamdani’s democratic socialist allies flexed real muscle. They unseated two sitting congressmen.

They showed that grassroots organizing and ideological energy can overcome seniority and committee leadership. They proved that the mayor’s endorsement carries weight.

Tuesday night changed the shape of New York’s congressional delegation. Two incumbents lost. Two challengers won.

The party’s ideological direction shifted left. The mayor’s operation proved decisive. That is the story of the night.
